Huge warning labels on Chinese cigarette packs

chinesecigarettes123106.jpgWe spotted these yesterday (they are hard to miss) in a shop on Shimen Er Lu near Fengxian Lu. Notice, of course, that the warnings are in English — these cigarettes are intended for sale in Australia and Europe, not China. Still, amusing to see these packs on the streets of Shanghai.

The Chunghua were 30 kuai and the Double Happiness were 7.5. We have little use for the packs after having photographed them, so if you see us on the street we will gladly give you a free cigarette.

Here is something to ponder, though: Do people really buy Chinese cigarettes in Australia and Europe?

Specifically, that's a packet intended for Australia - it's the Australian Quitline number.

the chinese load up on them at duty free but probably love the ones with the warnings so they have "proof" that they really were bought abroad. word.

The market for chinese cigs is indeed mostly chinese, though when I come to China people ask me for the big american brands. I really don't know or care which ones are better, but people smoke american cigs for appearance.

Well, saw Chinese cigarettes in SFO, but most people (if not all) purchased them were Chinese - heading back to China. I would guess that the cigarettes (Chunghua and Panda brand) were cheaper in SFO than in China.

  • I saw Chunghua cigarettes at the Charles De Gaulle airport 2 days ago. 30 Euro for a big box, feng zi!

  • I come from shanghai China, struggle 4 my degree at Sydney now. If you have been to Sydney you will know there is a huge market for Chinese cigs.
