Street Food: One of the best kǎo ròu in Shanghai

bbq.jpgOut of this world, exquisite, unbelievably good-tasting meat on a stick. This is not your two-a-penny BBQ vendor to be found peddling rat meat outside VIP Room at 3am, the food at Naughty Barbecue (táo qì shāo kǎo - 淘气烧烤) will blow your head off. Better yet, the owner, Hán Lóng, and his girlfriend, Polly (Zhū Mǐn), are so friendly and cool that you’ll be happy to spend as much money here as you can, which still won’t be very much.

The prices are the same as anywhere else, but the selection is wider. You’d be crazy not to try qié zi (egg plant), suàn miáo (garlic shoots), xiāng gū (shiitake mushrooms), tǔ dòu (potato), and yáng ròu (mutton). Easiest way to order is to point at what you want — they also have a Chinese menu which we translated here.

They are open from 5-6pm through to 4-5am. The location is a stone's throw from Xīntiāndì which means Friday and Saturday nights are busy as hell. The address is 4 Héféi Lù just to the West of Jínán Lù. (That is a cross road but it is made from three roads — weird, the other road is Zhàozhōu Lù).

hehe, that was a rather angry comment. How seriously some people take themselves. I suppose the coolio street pals wouldn't be mean, they are so friendly and cool!

Trev, what a wonderfully witty tidbit of satire you've just contributed to this forum - did you or your pet monkey come up with that? Dick.

Hey Mark knows all the cool locals on the street, it's so fun knowing real Chinese people and being all cultural and that!

    Enjoy your cat meat.

Thanks for this Mark - it's nice to see someone covering these great little street food spots. Do you know anywhere in town doing authentic, Sichuan-style shao kao? With rabbit?

    Cheers, looking forward to more.

Eaten there many times, as I used to have a friend living on Hefei Lu. I had to think about it a minute, but now I'm sure that's the one. They do a great chicken wing (be patient) and sometimes a whole corn cob, right? There's little sawhorse seats and a table like you find at huantun/chowmien carts. Beer available from the shitty convenient store on the northwest corner (the BBQ is on southeast if I recall).
