China, the Dorito has landed

doritoschina010907.jpgWe remember the joy we felt (back in 2003) when we first found Chinese Gatorade, meaning real Gatorade in Chinese packaging, meaning not the expensive imported stuff at City Supermarket. We have since weened ourselves from our Gatorade addiction, but we still understand Shanghai blogger John Biesnecker's excitement upon discovering that Doritos are now being manufactured for the Chinese market. We quote:

Doritos. Real doritos. In China!

We have to ask: Did they have Cool Ranch flavor? We kind of hope not — because that would mean all sorts of bad things to our health. You see in the photo, "Nacho Cheesier Flavor" is translated to 拉风芝士味 (la feng zhi shi wei). This likely means "Latin Style Cheese Flavor" since 拉风 is probably short for 拉丁风味 (la ding feng wei) which means "Latin Style." But 拉风 by itself could also mean "doing something really cool," according to a friend of ours.

Before you go out and binge on the cheap nacho cheese goodness, though, take a look at this link, which we also found through John's blog. Looks like you only have to eat around a dozen Doritos (41g) to rack up 200 calories. But at least it's better for you than fried bacon.

Geez... thanks Shanghaaist for keeping me posted on what's available at the goddamn Quickie Mart! Do you just sit around smoke pot and then write this shit when you get the munchies??? Good grief!

But at least it's better for you than fried bacon.

or raw bacon.

I don't see anything wrong with posting about the products of foreign origin which are available to people in shanghai. Seems relevant to an english-language blog about Shanghai.

uh yeah, theres is two of them in recently. i hope there is also something more interessting in China.

Sweet, no more carting back one precious bag of Doritos back from the US and savoring them until they are stale!

Also, as a person who lives in Shanghai, I find this news extremely important. Maybe those outside of China would find it hard to grasp why this is significant news, but imagine living in a Dorito-less city for 3 years!
