Southern Barbarian is definitely a high value for money restaurant. Finally a Chinese restaurant worth returning to regularly. The food is NOT pretentious for a change! Honest food, terrific selection of beer, good hospitality - and inexpensive to boot. What more could you ask for?

I've made the trip too, and I disagree. I think the food at Southern Barbarian is wonderful -- way way better than the street vendors. I've been very disappointed with Shanghai's Chinese restaurants so far, finding few worth returning to. With Southern Barbarian, at last there's somewhere serving great, cheap food which isn't drowning in sickly sweet brown gloop.

I made the trek expecting something great. The BBQ fish and chicken wings, which the semi-charismatic owner seemed very proud of were not even on par with the street side sellers. Quite underwhelmed to be honest.
