Yesterday, we got this tip from China Car Times:

Geely Autos is holding a competition for designers all over the world to help it design a new logo, the criteria for the new logo is that should symbolically representative, artistic, as well as being practical and being able to embody the corporate concept and spirit of Geely Holding group. However, we at China Car Times believe that Geely should forget the logo, leave it as it is we say, instead they should work on their new slogan for 2007, which is ‘Beyond_the value‘ yes, that is an under_score. Oh, Geely is throwing down a 3.6 million RMB cash prize (thats about $461,000USD) for the winning logo.
Here's another idea: How about a new company name?
On the Geely website we found this release about the contest. Looks like it has been going on for a week or so now — and we're not sure when it ends. The release didn't mention 3.6 million yuan, but a Baidu search shows that the figure is apparently accurate. Seems you can email your logo to logo@geely.com.
We've been brainstorming over here at Shanghaiist headquarters. Here's what we have come up with so far:

And our favorite:

More of our ideas can be found here

The Green Bay Packers' logo for a car company?
In the spirit of the overall condition of the chinese car industry, why not fill in the "G" with the logos of foreign car makers.
The Green Bay Packers' logo for a car company?
that deserves a question, but using G-Unit's medallion raises no eyebrows?
The Georgia Bull Dog's logo for a car company?
I believe you, Shanghaiist, are not taking this Geely logo contest one bit seriously. And I, as a potential Geely car buyer, am greatly distressed by this.
do they search only a logo or a new text style too?
Well, you already need to be in the trade and have a graphicsdesignbusiness to enter, if I read the reply I got.
Thank you for your letter to us, please send your works to this address: Room 517, #1760 Jiangling Road, Bingjiang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, P.R. China. Thank you!
The following is the request of our designs, we will be pleased that you can obey it
(1) Contributes requirements: contributes are required with professional design software (e.g. PHOTOSHOP、ILLUSTRATOR、CORELDRAW、3DMAX etc), electronic document material, a copy of each color and black & white printed manuscripts for each.
(2) The references need to provide in contributions:
Contributions from unit:
① Copies of the unit’s business license and legal person’s code certificate.
② Copies of the unit’s legal representative’s ID and other valid certificates;
③ The original legal person’s consignment authorization and copies of consignee (participant)’s ID and other valid certificates;
④ Works: a copy of electronic material, black and white and color design charts in duplicate each as well as a copy of design direction.
⑤ Unit introduction, contacts and classic designed cases.
Organization (Two or more than two persons):
① Copies of participants’ ID and other valid certificates, and common competition declaration signed by all the participants.
② Works: A copy of electronic material, black and white and color design charts in duplicate each as well as a copy of design direction.
③ Introduction and contacts method of each participant.
Individual:
① Copies of participants’ ID or other valid certificates.
② Works: A copy of electronic material, black and white and color design charts in duplicate each as well as a copy of design direction.
③ Introduction and contacts of each participant.
The works refer to identification system design of vehicle logo (including VI handbook), not just a single logo or symbol. Concerning the large workload of completing VI handbook, it’s allowed for designers to separate contributions as two parts. But the first part must embody main identification design of vehicle logo, and the second one’s time for contributing cannot exceed the deadline.
Best Regards
Geely Holding Group
Confusing as hell but @ least they replied to you with some kind of written brief. The last line in their correspondence above states the it "cannot exceed the deadline" did they give you a deadline - does anyone know a date for close of entries? Any other info on this comp would be gratefully appreciated
Antonov signs gearbox production licence with Geely
The board of Antonov plc is delighted to announce that it has signed a production licence agreement with Zhejiang Geely Automobile Gearbox Co., the transmission manufacturing subsidiary of Geely Automotive (‘Geely’). This follows the announcement on 27 November 2006 that Geely and Antonov had signed heads of agreement for the licence, which is for the production of the company’s TX6 six-speed automatic transmission.
Under the licence, Geely will have the non-exclusive worldwide rights to manufacture and sell transmissions covered by the Antonov 6-speed automatic patents and will also receive design support from Antonov.
Antonov will receive licence fees totalling Euro 900,000 payable over the next nine months and then a production royalty on each transmission produced.
Geely is one of China’s leading automotive companies and is listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange and currently produces around 200,000 cars per annum and continues to grow strongly. Both companies will be working together to incorporate the TX6 into a number of models with production commencing in 2008.
Geely has already taken two models of conventional automatic transmission to production and the Antonov TX6 will be an addition to this model line-up. The transmission will also be available to other vehicle makers worldwide.
The dream of Chinas Li Shufu.

Some words concerning the video's. (1)
Geely is the fastest growing PRIVATE car manufacturer of China. The owner "Li Schufu" is an remarcable man.
He do not like all kind of joint ventures. His view is that China (Geely) has to developed his own brand of cars, and so he do. The problem is sometimes, that the Chinese car manufactures has not the modern western technology to make the cars at the same quality as the US and European standards. And this is the goal of Li Shufu, Geely is go na build own brands of cars with the latest and best technology.
For example: China has NO production of automatic transmission. To import these is no propblem, but he find that Chinees people has to be proud to build there own automatic transmissions. Geely is the only car company who can make (for now, only a 3-speed automatic transmission) but this is changing very rapidly.
Geely has taken a license from Antonov company to build the Antonov six-speed automatic transmission: The TX6. (a very modern six-speed automatic tramission with the best and latest new developed technology).
First test will be in 2008 in a Geely car and production will follow at the end 2008 or begin 2009 for different Geely car models.

Li Shufu is smart. He believes in this (Antonov) technology. His company is the fasted groing car company in China. See: video documetation: http://nl.youtube.com/profile?user=Warrenthesecond
His cars are the best of China's car companies. He innovate his cars/factory with the most modern technology he can get. General motors, Chrysler, Toyota, VW wil not give the Chinees the most modern technology. They say: "you can make MY cars in your country" and Li Shufu says: I make my own cars with the best technology and Know How who I can get.
For example SAIC and NANJING are also smart. They buy the callopsed MG Rover factory and have now modern western car technolgy. Before MG Rover callopsed they want to start with the production of the MG Rover Streetwise (Rover 25). But unfortunality MG Rover Collapsed. Just before production of the MG Rover Streetwise was going in production with the Antonov six-speed. This is the reason that the MG Rover Streetwise is the demonstrater car of Antonov company with the TX6 speed automatic transmission in it: see video:

We shall see what the future Geely will bring.

Six-Speed Automatic
Market Issues:
Efficiency of conventional autos too low but CVT requires dependence on specialist belt supplier
Efficiency can be improved by use of wet clutch launch not torque converter but this requires wider ratio range from transmission
Wider ratio range requires additional speeds to retain optimal powertrain efficiency and good shift quality leading to higher cost and weight
Problem Statement:
How to achieve a compact, high efficiency transmission with 6 speeds, no multi-clutch shifts and no specialist components?
Antonov Solution:
The six-speed makes use of simple planetary gear sets arranged on two countershafts
Combination of planetary and countershaft layout provides multi-speeds with simple shifting and high efficiency
Solution is light and compact and scalable to all transverse installations
Status
Transmission has reached Concept Readiness and initial production designs have been completed
Concept Demonstrators successfully signed off by a customer as being ready for the production design phase. Supplier nomination and production planning now under way.

Six Speed Automatic Transmission
Since 1995 Roumen Antonov, together with a small team of engineers, has explored novel planetary automatic transmissions.
By 2002, four generations of innovative concepts had been developed and prototyped in running demonstrator cars of various types. This work enabled AAT to build up essential expertise as well as gain feedback from major OEM’s resulting in a constant evolution from generation to generation.
Created in 2003, the Antonov 6 Speed Automatic Transmission is based on new kinematics and architecture and protected by patents.
For the first time a combination of planetary gears and parallel transfers of power has been created. The engine’s output is transferred to two parallel three-speed modules. Each of these can independently accept power and transfer it to the differential.
In each module, three speeds are produced by two simple planetary gears, two brakes and one clutch. Using the friction elements the transmission can select up-shifts and down-shifts in any combination. Each shift is produced with only two friction elements, one engaging and one disengaging simultaneously. Reverse is also provided in one module.
The transmission is very flexible, it can produce any overall ratio and any steps between any of the speeds. When power is transmitted, only one of the planetary gears is carrying torque. The speed of the two modules is slightly reduced with respect to engine speed. There are three direct drives on 4th, 5th and 6th speed, and there are no freewheels in the design offering the potential for higher efficiency.
The start device is one of the wet brakes in one of the modules. This enables easy and effective calibration of launch, with low thermal loading of the friction elements. It also enables the torque converter to be eliminated which reduces cost, weight and size whilst improving efficiency. The system is modular and four, five, six or more speeds versions can be chosen to suit a particular cost and application requirement.
The end result is a compact, lightweight automatic transmission applicable to a wide range of vehicles. This simple design consists of standard components similar to those of current production automatics offering low cost of development and easy new product introduction.

One of these days Geely or other Chinese car companies will use also these very modern and proved Antonov technology, like the Antonov Dual-speed supercharger.
With the antonov supercharger you can make your car with a small engine even powerfull as a car with a big engine.
does anyone know whats happening with this competition? Did it go ahead is Geely going to announce a winner anytime soon?
