Spit bags come to Shanghai's taxis

chinaspitbag011807.jpgThe Shanghai Daily reports that cabbies are going to get plastic bags in their cars so that they don't have to spit outside.

While Shanghai residents have generally heeded the no-spitting plea in the interests of health and manners, many taxi drivers seem to have missed the message, and are continuing to spit out their windows.

A survey, conducted last year by Health Promotion Campaign officials, revealed the anomaly, authorities said yesterday. And the solution, they said, is in the bag.

We're not quite sure that deserves to be called an "anomaly," but hey, less spitting is good. This report (in Chinese) says that the bags are also for the passengers. Does that mean there will be one for the passenger and one for the cabbie? How long do you use one before disposing of it? We don't want to be sharing phlegm bags with the cabbies, much less countless other passengers.

In Beijing the Olympics is the driving force behind the anti-spitting campaign. There you get fined, and if you don't pay up it seems you are made to wipe up your phlegm, making sure not one drop of that yellowish gooky stuff remains on the ground. We don't know how true that is. Beijingists? Want to let us know?

  • The spitting problem in Nanjing doesn't seem any better to me. And it definitely is not just cabbies. All people, all ages, all the time.

  • Some Chinese traditions are tough to die...

there should be a campaign to educate people on how to swallow their own spit. afterall, it's just a bunch of mucus and neutrophils.

Yeah.. I don't know if cabbies should be spitting into anything held by their hands which will then be holding my change. I've seen cabbies miss when spitting out their driver's side windows and unless these bags are gigantic industrial garbage bags, I would anticipate getting a little something extra along with my fahhh pee yoww.

  • The question I've had ever since I heard of the spit bag concept was "what happens to all the bags?" I can imagine trashcans overflowing with spit bags and gutter clogged with phlegm-filled plastic. And will all that plastic be recycled?

This sounds like and awful (and not-at-all-hygienic) solution. I'd much prefer a cabbie (or previous passengers) to direct their spit toward the road than a small bag inside the car. What if they have bad aim? Better yet, why not forget the bags and teach people this fact: They don't need to spit.
