Editor’s note: Sorry for getting this up so late in the day. But if you still happen to be stuck behind a computer, there is plenty of time left to show your love for Australia!
This isn’t the latest personals ad from Shanghai’s Craiglist, but a call to all Shanghai resident Aussie cobber digger mates to celebrate Australia Day. January 26th signifies an important date in Australia’s history. For most Australians, it represents an opportunity to fire-up the barbie, to sink a couple of tinnies, and to roll an arm over in the backyard for a bit of tip and run. For the Australian mob in Shanghai, there are a couple of ways to celebrate the day. Shanghaiist’s venue of choice will be the Eager Beaver which is hosting an Australia Day Booze Up from 4pm this arvo replete with meat pies, Coopers’ Sparkling Ale and barbequed snags. Let’s just hope they’ve got TripleJ’s Hottest 100 songs of 2006 streaming in via Auntie!
The weekly Friday mixer hosted by The Australian Business Connections at the Radisson Xingguo Plaza will also have a strong holiday flavour today, and is always worth turning up for the grog and tucker on offer.
Ironically, The California Club at Park97 is also hosting an Australia Day event, but they’re serving Fosters, which no self-respecting Australian would ever admit to drinking, so you’re unlikely to find us there.
Should you bump into a jovial bunch of Aussies today – be warned. Excessive reference to the infamous knifey-spoony episode, or use of the term Down Under will not be tolerated. Otherwise you’ll be on the sharp end of a right booting.
The unofficial Australia Day celebrations start at 4pm today at the Eager Beaver (28 Yueyang Lu, near Dongping Lu). 岳阳路8号（东平路). Telephone: 6474-3216
