We think that's exactly what we said when we read this email from the fine fellows at China West Entertainment:
We have just confirmed the legendary, Grammy winning (and nominated for 2 more in 2007!), #1 hip-hop band in the world, THE ROOTS to perform in mid-April in Shanghai and Beijing. Press release and materials forthcoming, but in the meantime, here's some facts and ticket prices ...
Let us repeat: Holy shit! The Roots!
Here are the details:
The Roots at Yun Feng Theater, 1700 Beijing Xi Lu near Jiaozhou Lu (北京西路1700号 近胶州路), April 16. Tickets RMB 280, 380, 480 (not on sale yet).
They are also playing Star Live in Beijing on April 17. Same prices.
China West has two other shows coming to Shanghai this spring, both at Yun Feng Theater:
- Ziggy Marley, March 27. Tickets: RMB 280-480. (Also at Star Live in Beijing on March 26.) We know what you are saying, "Ziggy Marley ... Isn't he related to ...?" Yep, you are right. Ziggy is the half brother of Rohan Marley, who played football at the University of Miami.
- Some guy named Kenny G, March 29. Tickets: RMB 480-1,280. (Also at Beijing Exhibition Center Theater on March 31.) We don't know much about this guy, but it has been said that, "Mr. G is very nice."

The Roots!

You seem like you are really knowledgeable about hip-hop, man. I'm surprised that you are so in touch with hip-hop culture and urban music. Keep it real.
Yes! Their album "black music for white people" was tops of the pops! I loved hearing it at the coffeehouse.
April is a long way off, plenty of time for the cultural purity committee to review the lyrics. The Roots don't typically sing songs about love and shopping so their "approved" songs list might be pretty small.
so a white bloke living in a music-starved city can't act excited about an act (members of which happen to be black) that is virtually guaranteed to put on a brilliant show? wtf?
i personally am happy to have some local music news that is actually news. i was reading the latest CW and they have a story called "chinapalooza" that says how great a year 2007 will be for the music scene here. this is who they mention: roger waters, kenny g, ziggy marley, and bugz in the attic. fine, but not much to get excited about. everyone else they name is a rumour: sonic youth (heard that one before), linkin park, bon jovi and christina aguilera (for 2008). why make a cover story out of rumours?
also worthy of note: they used the same photo of bon jovi (one of the wilder rumours) no less than four times throughout the issue.
OOOOOhhhhh...everything is shit...THE ROOTS ARE QUALITY! Im not a big fan of the semi-political preachings but this is a million times better than seeing Roger Waters tits poking through a black T-shirt....Come on...things are getting better!
I caught Qwest Love's drum stick in Central Park once. That was fun. I've seen the Roots three times, and it's always a good show. Be happy ya'all. No need to turn everything into some contentious petty ego quest.
i for one and stoked that the roots might be coming. i agree, things might be getting better. cancelled robbie, cancelled jay-z, and probably countless others that i'm sure i'm not couth enough to know about. but they gotta let some groups in, right? i'm hoping for the best.
You'll get K-Fed and like it.
Holy shit!
I ll be there too, for sure!
Hope to see you there too.
Hiphop and any kind of rythme lovers definetly can t miss that!
Maybe next time it will be Common Sense!
But before that maybe see you at BACK TO THE ROOTS on 2/10!
Peace
