Murder at an ATM in downtown Shanghai?

mace.jpgShanghaiist likes to think herself a little more adventurous and brave than the average Chongming Island girl, and we have always had late nights out without worrying about much, but this morning when we saw this thread (in Chinese) on a local forum discussing an apparent murder in the early hours of today, we got scared.

Many posters to the forum are claiming a girl was killed between 12 and 1 am this morning while taking money out of an ATM near Jiangning Lu and Anyuan Lu, which is about one block from where we live and around the same time we returned home last night. People said they saw police blocking this area. They also said they saw a pool of blood. People who work near the area said it happened at an ICBC bank. We are quite certain this is not a bluff even though it's not reported in the mainstream news yet.

As a single girl, we’ve always thought we were quite safe in the central part of the city, considering Shanghai’s crime rate is quite low, and this brutal ATM crime that happened in Ningbo a while ago seemed so far away from us. We're still probably safer in Shanghai than most major cities, but we're going to be carrying mace (pictured) in our purse from now on just in case.

I happened to be on Anyuan Lu last night around 1am; and I saw a few police just hanging around by their cars about a block away from where this is said to have taken place. Anyone who's been up there knows that street is a bit sketchy.

interesting. where is mace purchaseable? i am honestly surprised that all girls here don't carry it considering the amount of sexual harassment that some of my female friends have complained about.

Kink, I will for sure keep you posted on this, if this is true, I don't think the news will be released until they caught the criminal.

Vadaga, ask your female friends to check taobao, plenty of choices and conveniently delivered to your home.

My friend just called me saying this news was on TV this evening! It's true! My god!

This will be nicely spun into an anti-capitalism, anti-western values story. "The chinese people have been corrupted by foreign influence".

But seriously, looks like former PLA guys will be making some bucks as self-defense instructors.

Next up: Carjacking and CWA (Chinese With Attitude)

be careful girls
there are many capitalists out there who will stop at nothing to crack your skulls and take your hard earned cash
forget chinese people being corrupted by foreign influence
it's not about nationalism
it's about the very foundations of communism being attacked by capitalist dipshits and maggots
nationality has nothing to do with it

@Tony: You are kidding me right? Jeez...
