Murder at an ATM in downtown Shanghai?
Shanghaiist likes to think herself a little more adventurous and brave than the average Chongming Island girl, and we have always had late nights out without worrying about much, but this morning when we saw this thread (in Chinese) on a local forum discussing an apparent murder in the early hours of today, we got scared.
Many posters to the forum are claiming a girl was killed between 12 and 1 am this morning while taking money out of an ATM near Jiangning Lu and Anyuan Lu, which is about one block from where we live and around the same time we returned home last night. People said they saw police blocking this area. They also said they saw a pool of blood. People who work near the area said it happened at an ICBC bank. We are quite certain this is not a bluff even though it's not reported in the mainstream news yet.
As a single girl, we’ve always thought we were quite safe in the central part of the city, considering Shanghai’s crime rate is quite low, and this brutal ATM crime that happened in Ningbo a while ago seemed so far away from us. We're still probably safer in Shanghai than most major cities, but we're going to be carrying mace (pictured) in our purse from now on just in case.
