Head to New York City for Shanghai's best (and biggest) burrito
Some days, you just want to eat a big-ass burrito. Perhaps this is primarily an American craving (as many, we're sure some readers would point out, big-ass cravings are) but, trust us, sometimes the best cure for a Sunday morning hangover is an oversized soft flour tortilla filled with just about everything. We never thought this was an option here — Shanghai's selection of Mexican restaurants is ... well ... Shanghai really has no Mexican restaurants worth mentioning — until SH mag food guru Jarrett Wrisley told us where to go for our south-of-the-border[1] cravings: that's right, New York City Deli. And how does NYC Deli serve its "super burritos"? Of course, "California style."
Here is how the NYC Deli describes its 45 RMB California Style Super Burritos on its menu:
Super size tortilla, cheese, Mexican rice, salsa fresco, slow cooked carnitas & sour cream ranch dressing. (Add 7rmb for fresh guacamole)
NYC's burritos are only available on Saturdays and Sundays, and sadly by Sunday they were all out of guacamole. It didn't matter, though: Even without the green stuff, NYC Deli's Super Burritos are very, very tasty. And despite the fact that these burritos are big-ass in every sense of the word (they are huge), we are only slightly embarrassed to be able to say "we can't believe we ate the whole thing." One suggestion for NYC: Maybe throw some beans into the mix, or at least add it as an option. That way the wife, who doesn't eat meat, could have joined in on the gluttony.
Few other things worth noting: Delivery was speedy; be sure to order the corn tortilla chips and salsa ... it comes with, yes, a big-ass tub of fresh salsa that makes the 14 kuai price-tag a bargain; if you can't wait until the weekend, try one of NYC Deli's 55 RMB combo meals — we had the No. 56 on French bread (hold the mayo) recently and it was good. Check out their menu here.
[1] The big-ass burrito is more of an American thing (think southern California or Tex-Mex) than an authentically Mexican dish. But in Shanghai, anything from near the border is fine by us.
NYC Deli, 103 Fujian Nan Lu near Jinling Dong Lu (福建南路103号,近金陵东路 ). Tel: 6326-2835. Open 10:30am to 9:30pm. Free delivery within 3km.

Thanks for the tip, Jarrett!

All i can say is that eating that burrito is absolute gluttony. Its one thing that China wants to catch up with the world, but to eat a black woman's diet, you need a black womans booty and some.
You cant eat wontons all your life and then suddenly start eating steak. Its going to make an already ugly lot fatter!
I just need to add to that comment. As a FABULOUS and rather large set black woman I have always been complimented on how well I carry my very ample booty. It has often been compared to the size of Texas, which is where this Burrito looks like it may be from.
And a 2000 calorie burrito like that has never ceased to disappoint me.
Bling, can I recommend a little less binge and lot more purge.
Why only weekends? Such a dissapointment... sigh
That looks good. I haven't had a burrito in ages. I'd settle for a breakfast burrito right now. But I guess I'll have to make a trip to Shanghai for one. I want to see if it's a good match for my college days at burritos as big as your head (no exaggeration).
I'd kill for Chipotles....
Chipotles should take the KFC route here. Serve grilled octopus, fish, lamb, etc burritos. I'd line up for one.
It ain't no Chipotle's.
guess what was one of 2006's more successful, if not most successful IPO's?
Chipotle's, no kidding
now if only their food matched their financial performance
Tony Tang, my dear...and just who do you think is interested in knowing things like that?
are you people retarded. nyc has the worst mexican food in the whole U.S.
I dunno, call them LA burritos or San Diego Burritos - or god forbid MEXICAN burritos - but NYC Burritos bring up connotations of vomit for most Americans. .
Tony, if you even know anything about burritos, Chipotle's is the best corporate burrito around. Sure, you can go to anywhere in the SW US and find a mom and pop hole in the wall that is better, but you have to be there. Chipotle's is everywhere, fat, round and organic. That is why their stock is so hot.
Matty - it's not called a New York City burrito. The deli, however, is called New York City Deli. And while you might think New York City has 'the worst' Mexican food in the US, I assure you it doesn't. There are plenty of decent mexican joints in NYC - from low-brow taquerias to upscale places like Rosa Mexicano, but it's not LA... Sorry bro-dog. Anyways, very erudite observations my friend, they are particuarly useful on a passage describing a burrito in China.
yea, i've tried the burrito, it's certainly big and tasty. You can also try City Deli's fajita, it's not as big but it's real tasty. they have an online menu citydeli.cn. nice change of pace.
