Shanghai women (and men) can rest a little easier today after local police captured the final suspect in the ATM murder of a young woman on March 22. While trying to escape Shanghai by train, the fourth murder suspect in the ATM murder that occurred on Jiangning Road was captured and brought into custody. Two of the other suspects surrendered under their own volition, leading to the eventual capture of the other two suspects (pictured).
With the successful capture of the final suspect, more details have emerged about the crime. The victim was a 22 year old waitress named Song from Harbin. According to the Shanghai Daily, the crime occurred shortly after 3am, contrary early reports that the crime occurred between 12am and 1am. The suspects first saw Ms. Song walking along Kangding Road before she made her to way to a bank on Jiangning Road. According to reports, she would often make small money deposits after she left work. She was about to be married.
The four suspects are all teenagers from Anhui province, ranging from as young as 15 years old to 19 years old. Zhou, the final suspect caught, is only 16 years old. As if the ages of the suspects weren't shocking enough, the crime was devised by the youngest suspect, the 15 year old named Hu. Allegedly, the Anhui boys came to Shanghai looking for work. After failing to find work, Hu thought of committing a robbery and then returning back to their home town of Susong (宿松) in Anhui, with the cash in hand. Although she fought back, Song was murdered for the 40 RMB in her wallet.
