We missed this when it was released last year, but we thought 人 (“Ren”), also known as the Peoples Building (but perhaps it should be called the Person Building), deserved a mention — if only for its audaciousness. This is just a proposal for a new building in Shanghai. It has not been approved yet, and we have no idea if it will be approved, or how long it would take to build if it does get approval. We’re also not quite sure on the location, although if it is meant to coincide with the World Expo, perhaps somewhere near the World Expo venue? Regardless, it’s good to know we will have blue skies, green grass and clear water in 2010 — and people will be all colors of the rainbow!
Here is how Bjarke Ingels Group (or BIG) the Copenhagen-based design firm that came up with the idea, describes it:
The REN Building is a proposal for a hotel, sports and conference center for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The building is conceived as two buildings merging into one. The first building, emerging from the water, is devoted to the activities of the body, and houses the sports and water culture center. The second building emerging from land, is devoted to the spirit and enlightenment, and houses the conference center and meeting facilities. The two buildings meet in a 1000 room hotel, a building for living. The building becomes the Chinese sign for “The People”, and a recognizable landmark for the World Expo in China.
