Dumplings to queue for

As the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words. The xiǎo lóng bāo (小笼包) at this famous Shanghai restaurant — Jiā Jiā Tāng Bāo or 佳 家汤包 (translates roughly to excellent family soup dumplings) — are delicious and worth the wait. You'll need to speak some Chinese to be able to order here. If you just want xiǎo lóng bāo then it is fairly simple: "Yī lóng zhū ròu xiǎo lóng bāo" (one basket of pork xiǎo lóng bāo) (6RMB/12). Or for the crab filled — our favourite — "Yī lóng páng xiè xiǎo lóng bāo" (16.5RMB/12).

They also have great soup on the menu, and if you order a Coke it'll come in a cute bottle. Pictures here. The address is 90 Huáng Hé Lù, just to the north of the crossing with Fèng Yáng Lù. Open from 6:30 am until the afternoon. The short movie shows the xiǎo lóng bāo being prepared.
