The end of the Shanghai Baby?
The end, at least, as an author. Recent news reports revealed that the erstwhile sexual socialite and author Wei Hui (卫慧) the author of the once titillating novel Shanghai Baby (上海宝贝) suffered a major spinal injury that left her in a coma for over 20 days and was in danger of permanent paralysis. The article, in Chinese, is not clear about what happened, but says that it was an accident that occurred in Shanghai while Wei was out "playing," which might mean partying or just out on the town.
Much less importantly, this life-altering event waylaid Wei's plans of attending the premiere of the movie adaption of Shanghai Baby at the Cannes Film Festival. Earlier we had heard that former Playmate Bai Ling was set to play the lead in that film but then quit ... but we guess the film somehow made it through. However, there is speculation that this might spell the end of Wei Hui's literary career, making her new novel, Gou Ba Ba (狗爸爸) possibly her last. Wei said herself (she is now conscious) that after so serious an injury that she is considering putting an end to her short but salacious writing career in order to spend more time with family. While news reports are unclear about the extent of her injuries and her progress under therapy, it seems that she might be able to recover. Whatever she decides to do, we wish her the best.
