Chinese girls in kimonos, again!
With 2005's film version of Memoirs of a Geisha, Chinese people across the world had more reason to hate Zhang Ziyi and foamed at the mouth yet again saying, We’re not Japanese. You would have thought that by now the West would have cottoned onto the message.
Alas, Chinese observers rolled their eyes upon seeing Chinese models dressed like geishas, again, at this Madame Butterfly inspired fashion show in Paris back in January. However, like with many great works of art, it’s all about reading between the lines. The show happened to be the Spring/Summer 07 Christian Dior Haute-Couture collection by designer John Galliano, and the models were Guangdong's very own Mo Wandan (left) and Anhui’s Bei Pei (right). The real message to take away — these girls have arrived.
Participating in such a high-level, prestigious show can only be interpreted as having truly made it and been accepted into the fickle world of high fashion. Despite the theme they were the only Asian models in the show, aside from Japanese model Ai Tominaga.
Both girls already have successful careers in China and are based in Shanghai, but recently Bei and Mo have both been beating off established European ‘supermodels’ for some of the industries most coveted global campaigns and catwalk spots. Mo has already done shows for top designers like Vivienne Westwood, while Bei was personally selected by Muccia Prada and was featured in the Fall/Winter 07 show for Miu Miu, alongside fellow Chinese models Dong Jie and Zhou Xun.
With winning these campaigns and doing haute-couture, the crème de la crème of all fashion shows, they both certainly deserve the title of ‘international models’ now. Not just for parading around in expensive frocks and vertigo inspiring heels, but for challenging the fashion industry's strict notion of beauty and aesthetics. With the Spring/Summer 08 shows shortly approaching in August lets hope that they can hold onto their crowns and show the world what the Chinese can do a second time round.

it is actually Mo Wandan who walked for Vivienne Westwood, and Pei Bei for Miu Miu.
and are you sure it is not the Fall/Winter 2007/08 campaign Pei currently has a spot in? the S/S campaign was with L.Lohan.
From which source did you get this info regarding the campaigns? thanks.
^the Miu Miu fall/winter 07/08 campaign, i mean. it's usually still an industry 'secret' at this time, so i'm curious how you'd know Pei Bei's is confirmed!
O my this is embarassing, yeah sorry i did get the names swapped around when i posted. sorry (will correct).
And it was Bei Pei who did the "Autumn/Winter 06/07" campaign for. This then naturally led onto her and Mo being invited to do Spring/Summer 07 Haute-Couture for Christian Dior which has now cemented their reputations.
Thanks for the correcting me.
just a correction: Pei Bei 裴蓓 wasn't featured along actresses Zhou Xun & Dong Jie in the Miu Miu autumn 06 ads - it was another Japanese actress whose name escapes me now. The only association Pei has with Miu Miu is walking the recent fall/winter 07 show which was her debut season in the West.
ps: Mo is based in Beijing rather, and SS08 shows begin in September. :P
btw, Mo is from Guangxi autonomous region, not Guangdong. I met her in person several years ago.
Correct, but I wasn't just refering to the established New York, London, Paris, Milan fashion weeks in September.
But the global industries spring/summer 08 show season from August to early November, that will require models, such as the...
-Florida Focus (premium accessories)- Aug 5-6
-Moda Manhattan - Aug 5-7
-Coopenhagen Fashion Week - Aug 9-12
...and the one that's on every Fratboy's calender...
-New York Lingerie Fashion Week - Aug 5-7
did she tell you this in person? in every article and interview she's quoted as being from Guangdong.. any more myths to her background you can reveal here? this post is getting interesting lol.
Gracia, sorry I only had the information on her agency's call card and MVA verified Fashion Models Directory profile to go by with where in China she was from. Both said that she was born in Guangdong.
