oops, Zhao Zi Shu...my pinyin sucks. My bad.

Fake ham tastes ok. The fak ebacon tastes much like tha local "real bacon"...bad. I miss the nice crispy strips from home...sigh. SOrry, but nothing like the real thing in my mind. But The veggie palces mentioned above are all really quite good!

I have not had meat for around 15 years (since working on the Jack in the Box e.coli case), but even I will not eat fake bacon. Fake burgers, yes. Fake sausage, yes. But I have yet to taste fake bacon that tastes like food. Bacon tastes great because it is so high in that which is so bad for you: fat, smoke, and nitrates. It cannot be replicated.

功德林 the oldest well known Shanghaiist vegetarian restaurant never fails to have great vegetarian dishes. 枣子树 is another new one that is open behind Isitan shopping center. The last time I went there with 7 people it only cost us 300rmb for a table full of dishes. It was quite filling too. The name also sounds like "always eat vegetarian food" meaning to it.

Welcome to Shanghai. Jiao Zi Su (Vegetarian Lifestyles) has multiple locations to serve you with locations also behind WestGate mall off nanjing West Rd, and near the Gubei Carrefour. Their dining rooms are non-smoking and do not serve caffeine or alcohol. They take away section is small but in each store.
