Over the weekend we briefly mentioned MGM Studio World, a huge indoor entertainment complex coming to Shanghai. And today we found an image of the plans — hope you like Rocky. Here's what the press release says:
It is an indoor venue combining dining, unique retailing, night-time venues and entertainment in a space of approximately 200,000 square feet. The consumer-friendly entertainment destination is slated to be unveiled in the summer of 2010 to coincide with the World's Fair Expo in Shanghai.According to initial designs, the historic MGM logo will be prominently displayed at the entrances to the complex. Large, colorful images will be selected from the studio's vast film library of approximately 4,000 titles, which will be incorporated into the complex's decor. Among the key MGM branded areas within the complex are the exterior marquee, the central plaza spectacular (a multimedia show incorporating water features, special effects and films from MGM's library) and branded merchandise, MGM STUDIO WORLD will include special events as well as promotions of MGM's glorious history and current theatrical and television content.
And where would you put such a place? Why, everyone's favorite entertainment destination, of course — the Changfeng Ecological Business District in Putuo District. Wikipedia, by the way, says Putuo is "often dubbed the 'third-world' of Shanghai." Has anyone ever heard that before?

Well, Puto District is likely the poorest of the districts in Shanghai, only recently starting to remove industry and trying to develop residential and retail complexes, far after most of the boom has occurred.
Chang Feng Ecological District? i assume may be near the park, which while it is the coolest park in Shanghai, is really somewhat difficult to get to from any part of the central city. Oh well, wait and see i suppose...
The "'third-world' of Shanghai" comment is one of the funniest things I've read this week. The metro Line 13 has a Changfeng Park station, but the construction of that line hasn't even started.
