Chinese fast food downtown

shop%20front.jpgThe best two reasons to eat at Fēng Yù Fried Dumplings (Fēng Yù Shēng Jiān - 丰裕生煎) are the fresh shēng jiān, and huge glasses of cold soy milk. You’ll also get an authentic Chinese experience, friendly staff, central location, cheap prices, and fast service. The shēng jiān are fresh because they sell fast, so new ones are continuously being made. The soy milk comes - somewhat unusually for Shanghai - in a beer jug which reminds us of our first underage pint at The Six Bells in Lewes near Brighton, which at 14 was just enough to make us drunk. One pint of soy milk won’t get you drunk, but it’s a lot cheaper costing a mere 2RMB and more suitable for this hot summer.

The one thing about this place that we don’t like is their tendancy to change the menu, moreover their ability to change the menu right after we’ve translated it; how did they know? Nevertheless, this menu is the current one. A few shēng jiān, a plate of cold noodles with any topping and a jug of cold soy milk will set you back only 10 RMB. We also recommend the chicken and duck blood soup. This is an excellent likealocal restaurant. We won’t say that foreigners never eat here, but they’ve been absent for all of our visits. Here are some food photos (the last 2 in the set come from the old menu).

To order, talk to the woman behind the little desk on the left. Make your order and pay and she’ll give you some tokens, then take these tokens to the chefs. They don’t bring the food to your table so you have to wait if it doesn’t come immediately, or go take a seat and wait for them to shout to you once it’s ready. They are open from 6am to 6pm. The address is 27 shǎnxī nán lù (陕西南路), just to the south of the cross with jùlù lù (巨鹿路); and just to the north of the understated jìnxián lù (进贤路). Or find it on this map.

the map link doesn't work. The original post on Likealocal has a map embedded that works.

Um, Fengyu is a chain, they're everywhere in that neighborhood. You can't walk two feet without tripping over one.

I am waiting about the next insight about the discovery of Yonghe Dawang 'well, their sign sort of looks like KFC, but they serve delicious Chinese breakfast food!' followed by 'Danbing, yes you can eat it and it only costs 1.5 RMB!'
