China Mobile launches new IM: Free SMS

0606feixin.jpgIf you are a text message addict like us — 10 fens do add up fast, we have some good news for you. For a limited time, China Mobile (all you 134-139, 158, 159 people) is offering free SMS service with just one string attached: download its new instant messenger client, 飞信/Feixin/Fetion (Chinese for “flymail”). The IM, at least in its current incarnation is nothing to crow about, but it does have one ass kicking feature you won’t find in MSN, Gtalk or QQ: Free SMS within the China Mobile network, PC to mobile, mobile to PC, and of course mobile to mobile. Download the PC client here, and mobile client here (under your cell phone’s brand and model number). Mac fanboys need not despair, pop in a virtualization/emulation software and you can get in on the free loving too.

Account setup is a breeze (it does help if you read a little Chinese). Log in with your phone number and a temporary password sent directly to your phone and you’ll be messaging in no time: friends, colleagues, ex(es), names and numbers you don’t even remotely recognize, it’s time to reach out … for free.

So is it only possible to send text messages to people on your contact list? I don't read chinese so am having trouble understanding all capabilities of the program.... so far only been successful in sending messages to people on my contact list.

@NMF

Yes, you need to add some ppl to ur contact list first.

Here is a simple walk thru

Hit the "+" icon to the right of your search bar, a small window pops up.

enter your friend's(must be a China Mobile customer) # in the first blank space

skip the second blank

enter your name(or whatever you're affectionately known to your friend as) in the third space

enter your contact's name(or whatever blah blah blah) in the last box

hit "确定", and u're done, just wait for your contact's approval

when you need to send a txt to you contact, just double click his/her name. type and "return" I'm not using it as an IM, so capability isn't really that big of a deal. Hope this helps

Check out MovaMesenger. Great IM product/service free to download and use.
