Another small restaurant we like, called Naughty Fry (Táo Qì Xiǎo Chǎo – 淘气小炒) has the same owners as Naughty Barbecue. They have a large lunchtime menu. But in the evenings, it’s another fantastic location for barbecued food. Also for excellent oysters.
Cleanliness and oyster sellers have had some doubtful press recently, but we think they are quite clean here. In Chinese they are called shān bèi (扇贝), which literally translated means fan shaped shellfish. They’re sold here 3 for 10RMB. Same price as on Wújiāng Lù (吴江路). They come in a choice of dressings. In the photo you can see black bean sauce, dòu chǐ (豆豉); you also can find garlic, dà suàn (大蒜); and spicy, là jiàng (辣醤). All these flavours are excellent. They’ll be brought to you on a plate and you can use chopsticks to help eat them.
The barbecue food is heaven on a stick and equal in quality to that available at Naughty Barbecue.
The chef cooking lunch is from Anhui Province, where, (according to wikipedia), “the food is known for its use of wild game and herbs, both land and sea, and comparatively unelaborate methods of preparation”. Dishes range from 5RMB to 22RMB. This is an excellent location if you are on a tight budget, or if you just want to see how most Chinese people eat when they go out. See some more of our photos here.
