Given Ms. Ling’s historically troubled relationship with truthfulness, we’ll believe it when we see it.

I really respect her as a hard working woman in Hollywood who gets passed around like a piece of cheap deep fried Wonton that you know you shouldn't have but you do because it's free. Why all the hate? Half the single expats in Shanghai live lives just as debaucherous as hers.
Let's see: She lies, sleeps around, dresses immodestly (or not at all). I'm pretty sure on any Friday or Saturday (or Wed) night in this city you could find hundreds of characters populating dozens of bars with aspirations to have Bai Ling worthy escapades.
Jealous of her success? Afraid of strong sexually liberated women? If you want to despise someone, why not turn your hate towards Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendy Deng? Now there is a disgusting gold-digging floozy.
And for all those claiming she's ugly - - - if you are male, and heterosexual, and a woman who looked like Bai Ling was interested in you, I'm sure you would get down on your knees and thank your creator.

I think anyone who makes a good living acting in movies and TV is successful. Meryl Streep she's not, but I don't think you can argue that she's successful.
And fugly? By Hollywood's standards maybe she's average but she could walk into most any room and be the most attractive person in it.
But I forget that all Shanghaiist posters have 7-digit executive jobs and date supermodels.

I'm with Alec, alot of expat women already have a highly overrated sense of themselves despite the carbobloat they've all put on since being here and 99.9999% of the expat men don't even have a mirror in their bathroom, and they don't consider a girl "good looking" unless she is possibly jail bait.

You are right about expat men in this city. They have allowed themselves to degenerate so badly. While millions of local men aspire to look and behave better, str8 expatriate men in this town are walking about disheveled and smelling of alcohol. Have some respect for yourselves guys, or at least for the people around you and the countries you represent.
Meanwhile, Bai Ling is seriously ugly. Just because a few Russian whores are shaking their money makes for all and Sundry to smell, does not make it OK for Bai Ling to look a cheap Macau hostess.
