China has suspended the import of tainted meat products from seven US companies, including giants Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. and Tyson Foods Inc, the world's largest meat processor. China's quality watchdog agency announced over the weekend that Tyson's frozen foods were tainted with salmonella and that Cargill's pork ribs contained a feed additive approved in the U.S. but not China. In separate news, Chinese inspectors announced that a protein powder from a U.S. supplier contained too much selenium and was being sent back, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday. Beijing has been voicing complaints about what it perceives as sensationalized negative reports about Chinese products and indiscriminate action by American food regulators, saying that one company's problem doesn't make it a country's problem. The latest moves are expected to worsen the already tense trade relations between the two nations.

Hmmm . . . . interesting move by China. The USA might be sensationalizing things a bit, but I think the underlying truth that Chinese products are exported without much quality control is true.
Both countries need each other so much, but while for America China helps keep inflation low and allows us to deficit spend, China's (government's) very survival is tied with maintaining high growth through massive amounts of exports. This seems that rather than ducking their head, apologizing, and implementing reforms China wants to escalate this into a trade war, which would knock China's growth down a few percentage points, and what resulted could shake this country (exposing bad debts, unemployment / social unrest, etc). China is playing with fire.
