The bund has extremely strict zoning codes. You aren't allowed to change the exterior of existing structures - or in some cases - even light them differently. BUT they can do whatever they want with the interior - which wasn't terribly interesting to begin with.

Three possibilities: 1) The aloof and naive foreign partner, all good intentions, gets scammed by the domestic partner and the hotel ends up looking nothing like they imagined. 2) The owners install a small exhibit of what the hotel *used to* look like, and then do whatever the heck they want with the new interior. 2) The hotel is renovated in the old style. Now, assign probabilities to each outcome.
