This happened a bit earlier (June) but illustrates that climbing is dangerous no matter where you climb - a novice US climber named Michael died last month in Ritan Park in Beijing on the artificial outdoor climbing wall there.

Why do people climb? As George Mallory so succinctly put it "because it is there".

Boskoff took over MM with her husband after Scott Fischer died on Everest. Her husband died a few years later in an avalanche I think. I wasn't really suprised to hear that she and Fowler died in an avalanche after they went missing for several weeks. You can't cheat death forever. Not a kind year for the entire region really. 6 dead during the Everest climbing season and several dead in the last week or so on K2 and Gasherbrum II.

I read she was the CEO of Mountain Madness. The company has been known due to the infamous 96 season on everest, where the founder and CEO of the company passed away, more here: http://www.everestnews.com/history/climbers/scottfischer.htm . Jon Krakauer's book 'Into Thin Air' tells the story and it's a great read.

from a dedicated armchair-climber.
