This week in medical news: Bad Shanghai clinics, prostrates in flames and fake Viagra pills

Shanghai Daily tells us that the Shanghai Health Bureau has shut down three clinics in the city for "faulty practices", albeit just temporarily. They are namely - Shanghai Zhongtai Hospital, Shanghai Shenguang Clinic and Shanghai Hong'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic.

What faulty practices, we ask? Unfortunately, the paper's best practice standards do not require them to tell us anything about why the above-said clinics were shut, never mind the recent food scares and what not. (Maybe the editors thought readers would be too horrified if they gave it to us lock, stock and barrel and edited out the offending paragraphs.)

The two-paragraph article also included the following lines:

The bureau introduced a system this year to give local hospitals points to record their irregular performance. Those with high points will undergo punishment such as a temporary halt of operations.

Very innovative!

In other medical news, Zhongshan University (Guangzhou)'s Number Three Hospital Infertility and Sexology Department director Zhang Bin has something to say to all you porn and sex addicts! EastSouthWestNorth tells us what the doctor told Guangzhou Daily:

When the male reproductive organ is stimulated and stayed in a state of excitement (which results from addiction/obsession with pornographic websites), the prostate gland secretions will collect in the urinary tract. If the sperm are not expelled, bacteria will grow leading to inflammation of the prostate gland and/or testicles. Furthermore, he pointed out that excessive masturbation leads to too many dead sperm cells which will block the spermatic duct, leading to infertility.

Already the quote has been reprinted in numerous Hong Kong media such as the Apple Daily, and Hong Kong urologists have slammed the assertion as having no medical basis whatsoever. Thank goodness we can get back to our porn now that we're done with blogging for the day!

And for those of you that have been getting Viagra here and wondering why that erection still never came on, wonder no more! Chinese police have seized 18,000 fake Viagra pills in raids and detained 30 people on suspicion of either making or selling the drugs.
