<description>&lt;p&gt;If you can control your rebirth why would you choose to go back to Tibet to face persecution when you would have much more freedom and opportunity to benefit others from emigre and media focal points in India or Hollywood?

Rinpoches or reincarnated high lamas are starting to appear as westerners. The most famous one was Lama Yeshe who died in 1984 only to be reborn as a Spanish child called Lama Osel. The story is well documented in the book Reincarnation and the film Little Buddha.

Maybe a Lama will be reincarnated as a senior member of the CPC. Apparently, Mao offered party membership to a very young Dalai Lama when he visited Beijing in 1955.
