Shanghaiist loves good music gossip, and we are tickled purplish-red (our face usually turns this color after being overly tickled) to be the first to report that Busdriver, underground rapper extraordinaire, will be coming to China in October. Don’t know who Busdriver is? Well, damn it, you should.
After the release of his latest record Road Coat Overkill on apocalypse inspiring indie label Epitaph, Busdriver has been rated as one of the hottest artists this year by the likes of Rolling Stone, NME, Spin, URB and countless other music insiders (if I was actually an insider that would include me!). Busdriver is well known for his lightning fast rhymes, fun inducing free-style sets and some how being able to lay down rhymes to mixes by Deerhoof and Daedelus.
After attending a yawn inducing hip-hop night at Bon Bon (last Saturday), hopefully Busdriver can bring some insight in real rhyming (much needed) to the local rap scene.
In other rapper related news, Coolio will be in town to host the Beach Honey Final at Bon Bon, on August 18th, which will be a surreal experience for all of us who grew up listening to “Gansta Paradise” and now living in sinners paradise. Also rumored to be coming, if those pesky visa problems get worked out, are Public Enemy. Playing at the Beijing Pop Festival, PE might be heading to Shanghai early in September.
