The list is certainly flawed somewhere. My university is good, but it usually doesn't rank that high in US rankings.

UCSF? ARE you shitting me? Well, yes, its odd that a school that is ONLY a med school would show up on a list of comprehensive university rankings, but its a pretty elite med school. My roommate got into Harvard Med and Johns Hopkins med - but not into UCSF.

the ranking frenzy again...? maybe check out http://www.rankyourcollege.com/ and its disclaimer of course : http://www.rankyourcollege.com/disclaimer.html worldwide ranking just doesn't make sense, given the huge variety in terms of the philosophy of education.

And if you want a job in Europe, having a degree from Nottingham, Leeds, Bristol et al is going to be better than having a degree from all of the unis that Europeans have never heard of (i.e. all of them except harvard, yale, princeton, standford, MIT)

There are many different ways to rank universities but consistently US and a couple of European schools are top 20, regardless of the exact order they are in. I did notice that in the top 150, the IIT (Indian Institutes of Technology) are not mentioned at all even though many of their graduates work at top US companies and teach at top 20 US universities. nanheyangrouchuan

It was Wallace S. Sayre who said that university politics are so intense because the stakes are so low. Compare this with the global Fortune 500 annual list and most would concede that he's right. And anyway, how could Harvard not be No. 1? It has an endowment valued at US$30 billion. The real question is how the heck Yale comes it an No. 11 when it has the second largest endowment in the US (ahead of Stanford and Texas U). And what is Princeton up to? It comes in at No. 9, but has an endowment worth nearly US$ 2 million per student. Maybe they spend it all on hookers, drugs and oiled-up muscle men.

i think this list is pretty bogus as there are some many universities that are not listed. Also it more often depends on the faculty and staff at the time. you can get some faculties which have a good name but the current staff have been there way too long and not living in the real world.
