15 month old female toddler experiences precocious puberty
A female toddler that has experienced swelling of the breasts and menstruation at 15 months of age has been cited by doctors at the Nanjiing Children's Hospital as an extreme example of the rise in the number of cases of precocious puberty all across China.
One parent who always thought her 3 year old daughter, who at 1.4 metres tall, was just growing faster than her peers, but one day, she was surprised to find her daughter's breasts swelling and the girl was complaining of a pain in her belly. Doctors found that the parent was giving the girl too many calcium tablets which caused the girl's bone structure to grow very fast. Parents of the 15 month old girl cited above were also found to be feeding their daughter calcium for about six months.
Precocious puberty is defined by the Nanjing Children's Hospital as sexual maturation before age 8 for girls and age 10 for boys, and can be a very difficult time for the child not just physically but also emotionally and socially. The hospital sees about 40 to 50 such cases daily, and has seen over 3,000 cases in just the months of July and August to date.
Precocious puberty, a growing problem around the world, is a newly emerging pattern in China.
