It is official...the golden week has finally hit Shanghai, and it is hitting us hard, with a multitude of music festivals. So for those of you who are taking the vacation serious and drinking so much you can't think straight, Shanghaiist is here to do the thinking for you. Feel free to print and paste the sample itinerary listed below to that one pair of underwear you plan on wearing for the entire week.
After two days of rest, things really start to pick up on the 3rd of October (Wednesday) with the Rock-ing festival out at Zhongshan park. Negative and Malice in Wonderland will shred the stage with flying hair and plenty of guitar solos. The first band goes on at 5pm and we recommend getting there before 6pm in order to catch local favorite, Cold Fairyland. Sneak in your own beer, because we have no idea if any will be on sale in the park. Tickets range from 380-880RMB.
On October 4th, after sleeping in until noon, head out to the New Factories sometime after 3pm for the JZ Music Festival kick-off. Besides an eclectic line-up of bands that range from jazz to rock there will be a great creative mart, going through out the 4-day festival. And with tickets at 50RMB/day you will save plenty of money to spend on those cool DIY products. Yo-Yo Ma is also in town, playing on the 4th at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
Friday is when things really start to get insane, besides the ongoing JZ Music Festival, Vision Divine an Italian metal band (what's with all the European metal bands?) will be playing out at a venue on Sichuan Road called the 4x club. And of course (highlight of our Golden Week), the Yue Festival will start rolling out the bands at noon on the 5th. With a line up that includes, Talib Kweli, Ozomatli, Faithless, Yacht and many great local bands, this is a HUGE event for the Shanghai music community. Buy your tickets before hand for a reasonable 280 rmb, 140rmb for students.here. Tickets at the gate are 360rmb, still a great deal, considering the bands you are getting to see. If you are in town, claim to be a music fan, and don't show up to this festival....expect a huge kick-in-the-ass from Shanghaiist the next time we see you.
Yacht, with a sound best described as daisy sniffing, crazed rainbow music, will be playing a late night show on October 6th at Logo Bar. Should be a great chance to see one of the Yue Festival artists up close on a small, intimate stage.
So, there you go. A list of great things to do this week. Go on, stop reading and get outside!
