Eagle-eyed Chinese intern spots US$282.6 million error in Nassau County books

eagle1009.jpgNewsday.com brings our attention to Ellie Su, a 27 year old finance official from Dongguan who found a US$282.6 million error in the 2008 budget of the Nassau County Legislature barely 2 weeks into her internship there. On the page for debt service, it is reported, Su noticed one item that read $31.4 million instead of $314 million.

And what does Su's boss think of her?

Su would be a bargain even if she were on the legislative payroll. But her government is paying all of her expenses, as well as her salary.

Su herself who is the daughter of two government officials back home and looks into much of her city government's spending says:

Still, I was surprised at how few errors I saw in such a big budget book.

And she's right. The latest government audit report found 27 billion yuan improperly accounted for at 53 agencies that report to the central government, with illegal uses accounting for 4 percent and waste for 5 percent of that total figure.

Meanwhile, another 26 year old girl, Yang Huiyan, has topped this year's Forbes list of the richest people in China with a net worth of US$16 billion. We told you about her back in May, but looks like it's really official now.

Shanghaiist suspects this won't be the last we hear from the two girls.

Is the proper term to refer to a 26 or 27 year old really "girl"? Seems slightly disrespectful of these women's accomplishments, especially considering one of them was referred to earlier as an "official."

I spell "women" with two ' "y's" ', sometimes three when I want to say "wymynly"

Well, when a 26 or 27 year old chinese "girl" refers to herself as a "girl" there is no problem. When they have cute little fuzzies clipped to their cell phones and purses the "girl" tag sticks even more.
