Photo of the Day: A dongba from the Naxi tribe in Yunnan

A Dongba is the spiritual and cultural head of the Naxi culture in Yunnan province. There are never any more than 8 Dongba at one time, and to qualify to become a Dongba a man (no women allowed) must not only be able to speak Naxi and write the hieroglyphic script, but also be the son and grandson of previous Dongba. This 70+ year old Dongba entertains the tourists nightly with Naxi songs and music at a Lijiang Naxi Cultural show.
