Li Yuchun (李宇春) — the “androgynous wonder from Sichuan” who was the first winner of Super Voice Girls (an American Idol-style talent show) — recently gave a concert in Nanjing, and she performed in *gasp* a skirt! Now if you have no clue what an earth-shattering revolution Super Voice Girls represented (for the very first time, viewers were allowed to vote for their favourite singer via SMS, causing some powers-that-be to quake with fear) and how big Li Yuchun is, just look at the shitload of SVG-related stories we’ve done before. Two years after her big win, Li made it to the cover of a special issue of TIME magazine called “Asia’s Heroes” and remains just as popular today. In fact, she is so wildly popular she had to be escorted away right after her concert ended to escape from the crazy mobs. Since the day she was catapulted to stardom, a million allegations have been made that she’s lesbian — something she hasn’t confirmed nor denied. But with that many more dykie singers around in the market today (and we LURVE dykes), putting on a skirt might be the only way she knows how to hit the headlines (and the chatrooms). The first reaction Shanghaiist had watching the video was one of pity though. Tell us if we’re wrong, but the poor grrl does look very uncomfortable in that thing. We hope her manager doesn’t make her wear the mini-skirt next!
