I almost cramped up from laughing at your comment....It really makes you angry that people are doing something for someone else. Yes it feels good to help someone, and ever since i can remember it has been something i have tried to do, if i could. My reason for coming to asia was not to do anything other then enjoy my life and experience it the same as you.I think you need to find out why it makes you bitter that people are helping others.if you feel this way about these people. what do you feel towards the red cross or any civilized individuals who has helped another person. IN your whole life have you not helped another person? You throwing the shame, but place the shame where it really lies, in your heart..... You need a hug and if you were deprived of that and if that is where the anger is truly coming from..... I am sorry.. Good people of the world continue to do good.....your simple minded and outrageous comments want change the fact that there are good people who are helping....

Doesn't it feel good to save a poor Chinese man's life? If you could be honest with yourselves, you know the man is not even relevant. It's all about self-glorification. You people - white, black, or purple - came to China not to save their people but to exploit them in all ways possible. Shame on you!

Lets make this very clear. First off iam not white,and its kinda dumb for you to even think iam . No one is forcing christmas on anyone and if you had read the story you would have realized taht most of the people taking oart in this is not either, but i guess in your rush to blast your ignorance you skipped over that. I come from a place where racism is dominant and dont need you turning something good , as people helping someone into a racist crusade. Stop being bitter about the people who scarred you and beginnig tryning to change the the view and thoughts of the past. withthe comments you wrote it seems you still need some healing time. I am a african american with alot history of racism even in my lifettime.but do i go around tellig people to die off cause of there dreams of doing good.I think you need to read the story again. no one is stripping and from the place iam sure that would not be allowed. Stop jumping to conclusions and get the facts straight.

Don't you think it's silly to force Jesus on the Chinese when their culture is a lot older than the "holy" man himself? lucanerd, the world will never change until you and all the "good people" die off. Don't you white people think from the beginning of time that the rest of the world is "bad" and "uncivilized" and in need of a lot of "saving"? So you conquer them, kill the men, rape the women, and take their treasures. The world has not changed much since but the good old crusade has taken a comical turn. The foreigners have to come to the rescue because the ayi and her husband are foreigners in their own country and therefore have no access to the social safety net (frail as it is). Such is the rise of mighty China.

Iam amazed how things in the world never change, when there are good people in the world who dont sit back and jump into action to save another person without the thought of judgement. It proves that good still exist in a world of madness. Then i read the comments of idiots who write stupid things like will the ayi get naked.You show your personlality through such ignorant comments. Then how to save a china man from a white woman, iam an american and my comments would be too rude to even list on this blog. Place yourself in a someone else shoes and think about how it would effect you. I don t know the ayi, but my heart goes out to her and her family. Just like i would to anyone in trouble. respect the fact that some people care and if you dont then move on to the next blog and trying to make something funny about a non funny situatuion is a little cheap and trailor park humor. It's rather unlikely that the Shanghai Art Museum would be hosting anything less than high art in their building. "Semi-pornographic"? Bah Humbug. Good idea, but my ayi sings it's a hard knocks life every day. Can I just help her instead and something that is closer to home and then praise the Lord in my own special way? I wouldn't quite call this way random... I am also sad, sad that certain commentators don't believe in unicorns.

Excellent article, Kenneth. And thank you for posting it. Just need to clarify a detail or two. Rebekah is not an executive at Ctrip, but rather, a lowly web editor who lives in a shoe-box apartment with her student loan (fjiofojif brings ups a good point in assuming these people are well off and could afford to foot the medical bill on their expat salaries). This is not the case. The Golddiggers volunteers consist of a group of young men and women from: USA, Canada, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Madagascar, China, Trinidad, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Brazil, Pakistan and Cuba. Most of these are not high-flying expats, but rather: artists, photographers, singers, dancers, law students, engineers, architects and writers. I highly commend them for all their efforts.
