Wenzhou University security guard beats dog to death

WARNING: GORY IMAGES

This video clip is circulating big time on the Chinese internet right now, and has received over 470,000 hits and 5,000 comments on Youku within less than a day. And it is just plain disgusting. A security guard at Wenzhou University beats a helpless dog to death as students videotape from above. From the sounds of the students yelling out to the security guard, we imagine they are at a student dormitory. For those of you that can't bear to watch this clip yourself, here's what's in it. At the start of the clip, we see that the dog has already lost control of its hind legs and is trying its best to run away from its attacker on its two front legs. The guard comes up to the dog and after another two or three hits, the dog lies motionless on the road. But we imagine it's not dead just yet, it's just left there to die a slow painful death.

Even here on Shanghaiist, we've seen and heard quite a bit about kitten crushers and crazed animal torturers on university campuses, and one can only imagine there are a thousand other stories that go unreported. Gandhi once said, "The moral progress of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals". Isn't it about time China put together a law on animal abuse, and some SPCA-equivalent?

For those of you that are interested, Virtual China has English translations of a small sample of comments by Chinese netizens.

Update 1: It appears Youku has taken the video offline but we found another one on KU6.com. Meanwhile, there is an interesting discussion on Facebook going on at the moment, with some people throwing in the idea that the dog might have been knocked over by a car prior to the start of the video and the kind security guard came to put an end to the poor dog's misery. Having seen the video, we cannot proclude this possibility, but judging from the overall atmosphere of the clip (with the students shouting from their dorms) and the guard's body language, we doubt that was the case.

Update 2: Here's another somewhat older video of another security guard on some Hebei university campus who smashes a brick at a dog that's been irritating him again and again.
