Adding to the flux of design studios and boutique start-ups in the artsy enclave of Taikang Road, we stumble upon yet another new kid on the block. Projection 216 is a design studio/boutique started by fashion designer Jenny Ni who has also rounded up several of her friends including design duo Perk, T-shirt collective The Thing, artist/graphic designer Tyakasha, sneaker designer DK and even a manicurist, Mary to join her in this endeavor.
We were at the launch party last night, probably the first alcohol-free launch party we’ve ever been to (if you discount the celebratory champagne that was popped and the bottles, one each, of wine and tsingtao left neglected on the table). Maybe Shanghai would do well to have more of such cozy, refined events where people sip tea and nibble on chocolate brownies rather than freeload on booze. A fashion show was also lined up for the evening where Jenny’s friends sportingly doubled as models showcasing her custom-fitted clothing.
So while the design studio/boutique currently just stocks products and artwork by the group of designers, we were told future collaboration among the designers is not ruled out. We think this may actually be a good direction to pursue if Projection 216 wants to differentiate itself against other design studios, weekly film screenings à la le petit xiaoxiao in the spirit of all things artsy notwithstanding.
