1918 Art Space: Upstream

1918 Art Space on Changping Lu (a refuge from the sometimes overpowering art gallery street Moganshan Lu) is a must-see for those in search of up-and-coming, young Chinese or foreign artists who yearn for a little more recognition within the cruel world of the culture media. Its mere cubic space, inherited from this warehouse storefront-space building, gives on-lookers the best approach to appreciate all the different works of art (paintings, sculptures…) that are being exhibited. And the impressive bay windows also attract the eyes of many a passer-by.

Anne-Laure Fournier, the French woman who runs the gallery along with the Chinese owner Zhao Yonggang, will give you a personal tour of the current exhibition, which focuses on not-yet-famous Chinese artists from around Shanghai or Beijing. As the blurb from the exhibit leaflet points out, “people have proposed the notion that ‘Chinese ink and wash painting is absent in contemporary art,’ arousing extensive debates in the worlds of art and theory.” So here is the opportunity for us to see that it is wrong, and that a few Chinese artists are using old-aged techniques to suit their modern interests, thus risking partition from their schools or masters. The result is remarkable, if not at times brilliant.

The gallery has also a bar and myriad art books and reviews for sale. Other exhibited artists include 赵琨 ZHAO Kun, 李飒 LI Sa, 黄丹 HUANG Dan, 杨捃 YANG Jun, 傅旭明 FU Xuming, 杨怀武 YANG Huaiwu, 刘琦 LIU Qi, 党震 DANG Zhen, 方正 FANG Zheng and 沈沁 SHEN Qin.
