The above is from a report about the cancer patients affected by the corrupted medicine from Shanghai's Hualian Pharmaceutical. According to an article from Jan. 10:
Under the guidance of and with the participation of a joint investigation team set up between the Ministry of Health and State Drug and Food Administration, concerned departments in Shanghai identified the cause of the accident: Hualian's staff mixed Vincristine Sulfate into Methotrexate for injection and Cytarabine for injection, and this caused damage to the drugs and made them unqualified and unusable.
It's one thing to sell bad cold medicine, another entirely to sell bad medicine to people who's health is already pretty f*cked up. Now a guy who was just dealing leukemia lost use of his legs (which have become warped in shape as well), while others suffered various other side effects. People familiar with the place said that things were pretty messed up at the factory, like they were close to going belly up. In any case, you know how these things go--you cover up one lie with another, and soon you got a massive cover-up. But over a hundred people started suffering severe side effects, not just in Shanghai but in other places where the medicine was being sold (it was being sold nation-wide, actually).

east vs west, if there is one difference i'm clearly convinced of it's that death looms right around the corner here in the east.
the frequency of street level, sometimes even casual, conversations about departed family/friends/migrant/stranger/animals surprised me when i first arrived in china. be it freakish accidents while working, murder by hit and run, kidnappings, jumping off tall buildings, beatings, run aways, prostitution rapings, there are a bunch of curveball stories you hear over here (those not even reported on the news). i'm talking "stories" where someone actually knows someone that this happened to, and i'm not in no way affiliated with the mafia or wrong crowd.
the whole concept of stories being told in the whole "well, shit happens" tone is all the more terrifying.
i can only assume the conversations get more depressing/crazy the further you move away from the city and into the rural.
i must have been immuned to this kind of stuff back in the west.
