  • The International Herald Tribune has a great new article entitled Shanghai: The allure of individualism which explores the rising trend of young Chinese designers setting up shop to sell their own stuff. And they are not cheap.
  • The New York Philharmonic has just left Shanghai for Beijing on its Asian tour that also includes Hong Kong and Taiwan and a landmark concert in Pyongyang. The New York Times talks about the disappointment of principal oboist Wang Liang, when he learnt that he would not be featured as a soloist during the concerts. He suspects that the Chinese presenters of the Philharmonic "did not see him as a soloist attractive to Chinese audiences, as compared with Westerners". The IHT offers a different take on the philharmonic's tour.
  • The Shanghai Securities Journal, citing an unnamed official, says the long-anticipated plan to build a Disney theme park in Shanghai is "likely to move ahead soon" while a Disney spokesperson has denied there's been any agreement or deal made on the matter.
  • A Shanghai stem cell donor has saved the life of a South Korean leukaemia patient.
  • A Taiwanese man in Shanghai has been sentenced to two years in prison for his collection of 32 guns.

That IHT link appears to be broken...

the stem cell donor story is really odd- why would that make the news? Either it's meant to show the Chinese lending a helping hand to their poor little ROK brothers, or it shows that China has started selling blood products abroad.
