All this month (that would be March), the photography of Hong Kong artist Norm Yip will be on display not on the walls of a fancy-schmancy gallery on Moganshan Road, but on the meandering walls of Shanghai Studio.
The photography, in mostly black and white, features fit, mostly East Asian men in various stages of undress, in front of simple backgrounds or stark black backdrops. The pictures do not feature any naughty bits, so Mr. Yip's photography does leave a little something to the imagination. His pictures not only have an aesthetic beauty, but also have substance. While most of the men in the pictures convey a sense of somberness, there are other works that display a range of emotions from quite confidence to pure joy.
Yip is a native of Toronto, Canada, who moved to Hong Kong in 1994. Prior to setting up his own photography studio, he was working with an architecture firm. Besides making a name for himself for his work in capturing the Asian male, Yip has also become somewhat of a celebrity photographer. Celebrities he has photographed include Zhang Yimou, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child and Korean pop-star Rain.
For the art collectors out there, all of the photography on display at Shanghai Studio is for sale ranging from 1500RMB to 18000RMB, for larger prints. Also for sale are Mr. Yip's two books, 1.AM and 2.AM (the AM stands for Asian male). Each book can be yours for 300RMB, with 10% of the proceeds going to an AIDS charity.
For more pictures and information, be sure to check out "The Asian Male Fan Club" on Facebook. If you're lucky, perhaps the artist himself will be your Facebook "friend" and maybe photograph you.
