Hey batta' batta' swing! Dodgers and Padres in Beijing, plus the 2008 China Baseball League schedule

The Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres this weekend at Beijing's Olympic baseball stadium. Seating capacity is limited to 13,000 spectators, and sure enough Emma has sold out their allotment of the cheap seats here in Shanghai. We're curious as to the scalper situation in Beijing, but for the risk-averse, other Chinese ticketing websites still have a small number of tickets left. A little internet sleuthing can still get you into the RMB 88 section!

As far as the line-ups, San Diego is bringing a mix of veterans and new players to Beijing:

The Padres traveling contingent includes players with substantial experience in the Major Leagues (closer Trevor Hoffman), up-and-coming regulars (Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff) and a host of players who will play in the Minor Leagues in 2008.

The Dodgers seem to have left their star players in Florida in favor of featuring their two Asian prospects:

None of the pitchers on the roster played more than 16 games in the majors last year. Non-roster invitee Chan Ho Park, who is seeking to revive his career, is the most experienced with 11-plus years of major league service, and will be joined by pitchers including Hong-Chih Kuo, Eric Stults and Eric Hull, who spent most of last year in the minors.

That's disappointing for True Blue fans, but the chance to see Joe Torre leading a team in America's national pastime still has us excited to be there.

For the unlucky, unadventurous, or just plain lazy, baseball will show its face in our lovely hometown starting next month. The China Baseball League 2008 season runs from early April to late September, with a three-and-a-half month break over the summer for the Beijing Olympics. Shanghai's Special Olympic Stadium, Kangbei Baseball and Softball Field in Pudong, will host the city's Shanghai Eagles in 12 games this season. According to the official schedule posted to the CBL's site last month the Eagles' first home game will be on April 18. Take us out to the ballgame!

Dodgers left their stars? I'm sure that's news to Andruw Jones and Nomaaaaaaah.

user-pic

News to them, but no-one else. Two washed up players.

Billingsley, Kemp, and Loney are the current and future stars of that club.

user-pic

Alec you've misspelled "Russell Martin." Besides, the Dodger stars are always pitchers.

So who is going to introduce the Chinese to nachos, stadium dogs (along with mustard and relish)and big cups of cheap beer? Sounds like a business opportunity to me.

Who will be the first couple to get caught on the big TV doing something naughty in the top row of seats?

Doing something not-so-naughty in the top row of seats at a CBL game last year :

http://www.flickr.com/photos/msittig/514822286/

BBQ! (Note the crane in the upper-right hand corner. The stadium is relatively close to the river.)

user-pic

Oh yeah, Martin. He's good. Dodgers are good. T, if you're a fan, you're lucky. I'm not but I expect them to come out of the West for the next couple of years.

Cooking food in a sports stadium is a felony of the highest degree (especially in the US). Everyone must pay a day's wages for tasteless food! Just wait until Aramark bribes the CBL into letting them do all of the concessionary services, that'll fix those expat riff-raff!

user-pic

Nanhe - that's true for Aramark catered stadiums, but stadiums that have Levy Restaurants doing to food service have superior stadium food. Also, Dodger Dogs are among the few things that might have me believing in a higher power.

Alec - As a lifelong Dodger fan (from Fernando-mania through Gibson's home run through the Karros/Piazza/Mondesi/Nomo years through the crap on a plate the Dodgers have served up (except for Beltre's Roid year in 2004) I am doubtful about the next couple of years because the Rockies look strong and I am unconvinced about a manager's ability to change the fortunes of a baseball team and Jeff Kent won't retire. But it's spring, and spring means hope.

user-pic

Rockies had to go on a ridiculous winning binge to sneak into the playoffs. After Holliday and Tulowitzki they have a bunch of mediocre players that benefit from Coors (Atkins, Hawpe, even Helton now). Their pitching is weak - Francis is the only decent starter (maybe Jimenez soon) and Corpas and Fuentes are passable relief.

Best NL teams this year:
1. Dodgers
2. Mets
3. Brewers

Young and talented are those dodgers. Loney is a beast ready to explode, Kemp is on the cusp, Kent is immortal, Martin is already the best catcher in the NL . . . but there real strength is the pitching - Broxton, Saito, Lowe, Penny, Billingsley, Kershaw - no other team can come close, and pitching wins . . . I know it's good to temper expectations, but that is an excellent, well-rounded team.

user-pic

You forgot Jason Schmidt. And that new Japanese guy.

The Dodgers have been crushing my hopes since 1988, so . . .I somehow expect that continue.
