International news channels such as CNN and BBC are also getting routinely blacked out. While we think this is a really poor way to deal with all the shit that's going on, we have been there many, many times, and survived. Time to turn on your VPN again, people! And if you still don't know what it is, let me tell you it's the only way to maintain your sanity here. Shanghaiist highly recommends the services of our advertiser Witopia.

I don't know how they do it, but the GFW somehow manages to still block some sites even when I'm using an SSH tunnel (similar to VPN). An hour ago I was still able to get on YouTube to upload video of the riots from CCTV:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSd1mwzZPO4
But now I can't get through to YouTube, Blogspot, BBC, etc. even through a proxy! Yikes.
Get Surfbouncer (http://www.surfbouncer.com) and ask them to configure you to run on port 80 or 443. All the traffic will flow through. If you are being proxied just send the the proxy name and they will configure you to run through the proxy. Everything will work. They are great to deal with and provide personal service to tweak things for situations when the off the shelf solution doesn't work.
Rise up and burn badirty China!
Do NOT use Surfbouncer unless you want to pay way too much for way too little with a company that has been written about as disreputable.
Witopia gives you openVPN AND PPTP service for only 40 USD a YEAR and has been around for a long time. hotspotvpn is a good service too that gives you openVPN and PPTP, but they are much more expensive and I saw no difference in performance between them and witopia. Both were very fast.
