Giving money to the poor in Shanghai is not as straightforward as you'd think.
Donating a few coins to the street kids on places like Tongren Lu and DongPing Lu is just going to make sure they spend more nights outside, and rumors abound about the beggars on the subway (controlled by the Mafia, secret millionaires etc.).

Here's a good way we heard about to put something into the pockets of the people who obviously need help:
- Put a small bill in an empty water or pop bottle.
- Throw it in a public bin.
The people who will find the cash are the folk that make a living trawling through garbage- and we bet that even a 5RMB note will make a big difference to their haul for that day.
Pay it forward Shanghai, they need it more than you do.

good posts, or really. when i walk past a beggar, i don't give them money i give them a bottle of drink, chips or candy etc.
F'cking hell. That must make you feel soooo much better. You awful, awful bimbo
at least I do something and they enjoy it
I don't know that receiving someone's leftovers is someone that anyone "enjoys."
Good job shopgirl!! Keep it up. You are right giving food is the best way to show these people you care without contributing a single jiao to their handlers. Keep in mind nutrition is important too. Also talking with them will brighten their day more than anything else. Most of the time they feel invisible and despised.
And to these pitiful loosers who care for nothing but themselves. I feel sorry for you and your miserable existence. You will never know the joy of pure kindness.
And yes in my city there are people who wait for diners to leave the table and then they scurry in to collect the leftovers before the staff can clear the table. When you are a beggar in China you have no pride. Leftovers are just fine.
There are beggars that have pride???
