High Voltage, Yu Yin Tang Shanghai 21/03/08
Phew. The morning after the night before and Shanghaiist's ears are still a-ringing — and our head still a-throbbing — from High Voltage's gig at Yu Yin Tang (as promised, we also hit Brown Nylon Suit at C's afterwards, which probably didn't help) so we're hoping you'll forgive us if this isn't the most in-depth or analytical gig review. As you've probably already read on these pages, there are several bands worth catching this weekend on Shanghai's live music circuit, but we wanted to put in a good word for Belgium's AC/DC tribute band because, well, they rocked.
There was a decent sized crowd at YYT last night (given that it was a Thursday) and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves regardless of how much AC/DC they knew. With three gigs in as many nights out at Live Bar, plus a return to Yu Yin Tang on Tuesday, there's really no excuse for not catching their show and, fan or not, it's a show well worth catching. Shanghaiist has never seen the real AC/DC live, but we reckon they must be pretty entertaining and High Voltage were nothing if not good value entertainment. Sure, the real AC/DC might not take time in the middle of their gig to clink Tsingtao cans with the audience, and they probably wouldn't talk to each other in Dutch after the show, but who's really paying attention?
One last thing, if you do go see them, just make sure you're not at the bar or in the loo when they play Bad Boy Boogie. We don't want to spoil it for you, but just know that something pretty special takes place during this song.
