First light for PVG's Terminal 2

Wednesday morning saw the first passengers boarding planes and taking off for domestic and international destinations from Pudong Airport's new Terminal 2. According to the Shanghai Daily:

Terminal 2 offers passenger transit halls covering 4,000 square meters with 40 service counters designed to improve transit efficiency. The new terminal will offer passenger-friendly services, airport officials said on Monday.

The new traffic center connecting the two terminals offers access to airport shuttle services, long-distance buses, the Maglev station, taxis and parking.

The new terminal is to the right as you exit the Maglev station by the KFC. The International Herald Tribune has a more fact-filled article on the opening, including news of a third planned terminal:

By 2015, Pudong plans to complete a third passenger terminal, raising its capacity to 80 million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo a year, according to a recent report by the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation.

The opening of the new terminal is part of a nationwide trend: yesterday also marked Phase 2 of the opening of Beijing International Airport's impressive new third terminal, and state planners claim that 97 new airports will open in China over the next 12 years.

So T2 at Pudong has both domestic and int'l flights? Where can we find a list of the airlines that will service each? I think in the long run PVG should try to make T1 all int'l and T2 domestic to reduce passenger confusion.

Also in the last link, it claims "make the three direct flights across the Taiwan Straits more convenient". Uhh...what three direct flights? I was unaware that the PRC and ROC had ended the long standing status quo of not having any scheduled direct flights. Hopefully with a thaw in relations that will soon change.

I quite happy to see this airport infrastructure boom. It will do this country a world of good.

I still find it amazing that with the amount of flights these days criss-crossing our great Motherland that not more planes fall out of the skies - or do we not hear about this?

All these new airport terminals won't mean a damn thing unless they can fix the stupid opening hours of the Maglev, fix the stupid cab lines at Hongqiao and provide some decent food, bookstore and wifi options at the airport.

hmmm, Maglev operates 0645-2130 daily, that covers a good chunk of time of most flights.

Hongqiao taxi lines indeed are a PITA but whats that got to do with PVG?

And the new terminal DOES have bookstore and ...well, at least beter food than before.
