Crackdown on Dandi Wind's Shanghai concert

UPDATE, Friday 9:45 am: The show will go on ... at Windows Tembo.

UPDATE, 5:27 pm: This just in via email from the promoter:

PRESS RELEASE

Dandi Wind will NOT play Shanghai’s Shelter this Friday, April 4.

Due to the heightened sensitivities around live music in Shanghai at the moment, Dandi Wind will not play the Shelter this Friday. However, she remains committed to performing in Shanghai if at all possible. For further updates, people can SMS the following number (using CHINA MOBILE ACCOUNTS ONLY) 10657109095553

Looks like serious fallout from the Bjork incident might have finally hit, and if this is a preview of things to come then the underground scene in Shanghai is going to become a grim place.

Late last night we got word that (some prick) called the government to report Dandi Wind was performing Friday night at Shelter and neither the Shelter nor Dandi Wind has a performance license. Some men in uniform showed up at Shelter and told them that the show wasn't going to happen. Organizers are scrambling to find an alternative venue or beg the powers above into letting them go ahead with the show (unlikely without cash or serious connections). We will keep you updated on where the show ends up and Shanghaiist hopes that all of you (no matter what your musical preferences) get a chance to check out her wicked live set. Ironically Shanghai has been the only city to show much interest in cracking down on bands. Even Beijing is easier on promoters and musicians.

"some prick" = huge understatement.

Not saying this is a good thing but Bjork-fallout my ass - every venue in Shanghai that does not have a performance license and has had live performances has gone through this or something similar.

yeah its only "some prick" if the show cancelled is one I like. :P

But seriously thats sad. Nonetheless, it s the whole permitting system and such that needs an overhaul so while one may consider a snitch in this case a "prick" another may consider him a law-abiding citizen. Sad huh? Lucky Shanghaiist tells it like it is and is not limited to being truly journalistic in its reports.

Hmmm....anybody want to hazard a guess at which Shelter-competitor venue was the one to drop the dime? I have my suspects....

yeah i hate it when Shanghaiist fails to live up to its journalistic mission, shooting itself in the foot with posts like this and letting the Guardian, El Mundo, Le Monde, the New York Times and the Washington Post get ahead in the game.
