- The Pudong branch of Malones opened last week in Thumb Plaza
- In the same building, look out for the opening of The Eejit Inn, another Shamrock project managed by Declan (ex O'Malleys, Blarney Stone and Viscaya Club) and Brendan (Theme Pub Group Executive Chef, ex Dublin Exchange), due to open in May or June. The place name apparently honours another Pudong publican.
- Joy is leaving Joy Bar and Cafe (corner of Wuning Sth Rd and Kangding Rd), and has passed the baton over to Kiki, currently one of the night shift staff, and Lina, ex Real Shanghai Cafe. Methinks this place is doomed.
- The 2-4-1 martini night, every Thursday from 9pm at Vault Bar (Laris, 6F, 3 on The Bund), is attracting the large crowds who used to swarm to the similar function at The Westin. If you're a martini lover, it's a 'must-do.'
- D&G Martini Bar (1F, 6 on The Bund) has started an 'aperitivo hour' with a free plate of cheeses, olives and cold meats during happy hour time (6-8pm weekdays). They are also soon starting a 2-course, RMB90 lunch special that includes a glass of wine. Pity that it's way over on the Bund.
- Although Pier One is dead, with Maneo likely to follow, apparently one of the ex-managers is working on a project to resuscitate a part of it. Watch this space for details...
- Some of the cheapest wines in town are to be had at Da Marco (101 Dongzhu'anbang Rd) with 3 house reds and 3 house whites just RMB28 each a glass....and very drinkable too!
-The new daily happy hour at The Red Beat (72 Tongren Rd) has FREE Tsingtao beer flowing from 6pm-8pm, then half price house spirits and beer from 8pm-10pm. If this doesn't pull in the crowds, then nothing will.
- Like salsa dancing? Join the crowd every Friday night from 9pm at Club JZ (46 Fuxing West Rd)
- For wine drinkers out Pudong way, mosey over to Vino Villa in Jinqiao (350 Hongfeng Rd, around the corner from 'The Fox') where Anders and Simon will look after you. There's a good range of very affordable wines with some reasonable bar food, including a cheese platter.
- Still on the other side of the river, the I-Bar at the Intercontinental Hotel (777Zhangyang Rd) is actually a rather tasteful bar by any standards, although of the conservative dark wood look (which we sticks-in-the-mud like). The lack of happy hour is a bummer too. Nevertheless, on a recent Wednesday night this place was humming.
- A devastating development at Sasha's is the imminent departure of the very capable and much loved Florida who will return to the Philippines. Also, Henry, a bar manager there, will leave this coming week to move over to the Puli Hotel, due to open mid-year
- The Blarney Stone becomes The Mango Stone! The Blarney Stone (5 Dongping Rd), has had an orange paint job that makes the place now look like a giant mango or giant peach (where's James?). It's enough to make you turn sickly green! Political connotations aside, the apparent aim is to be the only orange pub outside Ireland (which one?), but more importantly the Blarney's management wants to make the place really eye-catching and that's something it definitely achieves. In other Blarney news, Alan ("Henry") will be releasing his first CD soon, whilst in the kitchen, they've taken on a Frenchman. For Aussie beer drinkers, Crown and VB are now available.
