The Crash Test Dummy Video Blog features videos of bike journeys around Shanghai. Recently they have been chewing over the same problem as Shanghaiist: Bought a good bike, Shanghai is great for cycling ... keep running into no-bike dead spots. Good for us, they have just released their first version of a Puxi cycle map.
The map is a work in progress and all readers are invited to submit routes in the comments section. Routes are colour coded to show eastbound. westbound or crosstown, for example. As mentioned, Shanghaiist has been trying to figure this out ever since we got a good bike down at Speedcat on Xiangyang Lu. The former French concession is good for wandering but as you get closer to downtown or the old city there are definite problems. We even got a five yuan ticket from the police while trying to traverse a small section of Fuxing Lu that was blocked to cyclists while under construction. It was worth it to see the same police then have to stop everyone doing the same thing in the name of fairness. As we cycled away there was a twenty bike queue for tickets.

Andy,
Am moving to Shanghai in December. Have questions and hope you can help.
1. I ride on racing bike. If I bring my own to china, will I subject for duty & taxes?
2. Are you aware of any amateur road/racing bike groups in Shanghai? Any good/ higher end bike shops in Shanghai? I know there is a Trek shop.
3. Any particular good district to stay in whereby I can cycle a bit in the am or weekend? My work will be in Puxi downtown.
Appreciate your help.
