Cold Fairyland are one of those rare Shanghai bands that consistently put out original music and have steadily been growing an overseas following. Check them out Friday at Yuyintang to see why everyone is raving about their melancholic folk sound. Jazz singer Pete Moore who will be performing at Labella’s Cafe is also worth a look. For fiddle fans head to Two Cities gallery where fiddle master Hanneke Cassel is in town with guitarist Christopher Lewis.
Saturday things heat up with our favorite Beijing band, PK-14, teaming up with the Antidote crew for what will be another mosh happy affair at Windows Tembo. PK-14 is recently back from recording their new record in Sweden and look out for that dropping sometime at the end of this month. If you are looking for less a leg workout and more neck exercises then head to Yuyintang where UK band, Mishkin, will get crowds head banging to some nu-metal.
As we get closer to the Midi Festival the bands are crowding into Shanghai for shows and some of the ones we recommend blocking out in your date book are April 18th when garage rockers, Queen Sea Big Shark, come down from Beijing to celebrate the release of their debute CD. The following night will be huge when dance punkers, You Say Party! We Say Die!, get both the hipsters and the punks mosh dancing to the same beat. On the 25th rapper Nas is supposedly breaking in the soundsystem at billards hotspot, Racks. Three great shows not to miss.
