Christianity vs. Capitalism Christianity and capitalism do not go together. For Christianity is Christ-centered and heavenly. Jesus Christ declares, “My kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36) Apostle John proclaimed, “Do not love the world and the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father, but of the world.” (1 John 2:15-16) Capitalism is driven mad by greed and worldly. Capitalism puts a premium on money (the lust of the eyes), sex (the lust of the flesh), and power (the pride of life). The Bible says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” (1 Timothy 6:10) Corruption, injustice, violence, immorality, falsehood, deception, fraud, aggression, oppression, discrimination, exploitation, wars and all kinds of evil in this world are brought about by the lust for money, sex and power. The prevailing Western values of money, sex and power are not compatible with the Christian values of faith, hope and love. On the authority of Jesus Christ, “You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24) The evils and ills of capitalism are many. To name a few: (A) Some years ago the executives of Savings & Loans in America defrauded taxpayers almost $1 trillion dollars with impunity. (B) American corporate executives recently committed the largest corporate scandals unprecedented in the history of mankind. (C) California power crisis was manufactured by greedy capitalists and corrupt law makers which brought exorbitant profits of billions and billions of dollars to power generators, utilities companies, high salaries to executives even though their stocks lost billions of dollars; bankrupted small businesses and put many households in dire financial straits, etc. (D) Millions of American workers still earn a minimum wage of $6-$9 an hour without benefits; but in 2007, several hedge fund managers made almost $3 billion each respectively. More than 80% of Americans do not earn $1 million gross in their lifetime. Do you see the enormous concentration of wealth in the hands of the few? Capitalism is not only deadly unfair, it is destructively wicked. (E) American film producers make pornographic and violent movies to corrupt the youth and the world for billions and billions of dollars a year. (F) The money-making machines of lawyers, doctors and health care providers, drug and insurance companies suck more than $4 trillion dollars a year from the American economy. This is not to mention the exorbitant profits made by oil companies. (G) According to CBS 60 Minutes some years ago, “American companies own the factories in China. They use cheap Chinese labor to make things for $1.10, then they ship them here and sell them to us for $110. The value of the thing an American company ships from China to the United States is counted as part of that trade deficit. A lot of that $90 billion (which is higher now) so-called trade deficit doesn’t go to the Chinese – it goes to Americans.” Capitalism exploits the poor and oppresses the weak. (H) The current American financial and economic crisis is a consequence of a combination of greed in banking and investment sectors and individuals who bought what they could not afford; the largest budget and trade deficits; the largest national, corporate and individual debts; the enormous fraud and waste in government; the costs of foreign wars and flawed foreign policy of world domination; the political system corrupted by moneyed and special interests; the dropping of dollar; and the irresponsible and unaccountable elected and appointed officials, and many more. Conclusively and evidently, the American values of money, sex and power are not compatible with the Christian values of faith, hope and love. Therefore what is practiced in America is capitalism, not Christianity. Capitalism is doomed to failure; it is failing and not working. The handwriting is on the wall of American society if you have the eyes to see! The undesirable and evil consequences of capitalism are going to get worse and worse until they suddenly overwhelm America like a tsunami. Many politicians practice spinning and hire people to do spinning for them. D. On truth – “You belong to your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not abide by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”（John 8:44）It is impossible for Christians to make false claims and blur the truth deliberately. Some are so diabolical that they consider their ability to tell lies “a batch of honor.” E. On trust – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” (Luke 16:10) If a government official misused billions of dollars, how can he be trusted at all? The American corporate scandals point to the fact how untrustworthy business executives are. The exposé of buying influence by lobbyists prove how corrupt politicians and lawmakers and judges are. F. On rule – “In all things, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12) How can a nation claim to have 200 miles of territorial waters and insist other nations to have only 12 miles? How can a superpower continually build up its nuclear arsenals and want to sanction another testing its missiles? Willy, you speak of the American desire for money and sex, but the elite in China are just as bad, if not worse. Rich Chinese businessmen are expected to have multiple mistresses! I'm no Biblical scholar, wongwillie (by the way, you do know what the slang term "willie" means in English, don't you?), but the "render unto Caesar" bit means that one should pay taxes to the ruling power. And by your analogy, China would be that power on a global level. Which it ain't. Just sayin'. Here's a more accurate "render unto Caesar" analogy: That "enemy of China," the Dalai Lama is quite clear in saying: Tibet should remain part of the PRC ("rendering unto Caesar") but should have more cultural and religious autonomy ("rendering unto God"). So I suppose the Christian thing to do would be to follow the DL's line. And an argument involving historical imperialism and China gets pretty shaky when you focus only on China as the victim of Western and Japanese expansionism and forget the simple fact that Tibet is part of the PRC today because it was invaded and absorbed by an expansionist imperial China. I know that according to mainstream party-line Chinese historical accounts, China has apparently never invaded or occupied anyone anywhere ever, but sorry, that just isn't true. But I agree that looted artifacts should be returned to the cultures that they were taken from, even though your messed-up argument almost convinced me otherwise.

First, the riots in Tibet were violent. Any responsible government would restore law and order to their country. Why do Westerners think Chinese government killed Tibetans, instead those rioting Tibetans killing Han Chinese and Hui Muslim? SO there is no justification for the protests. It is based on lies. Western media should be responsible for the distortion. Secondly, Paris police connived at those pro-Tibet protesters. The vice-mayor of Paris even invited the a guy from Reporters Without Borders to deliver speech before the torch relay. Have you see any gathering in which the host doesn't invite guest and instead invite the opponent of the guest to have the floor? And look at that Tibetan thug attacking the disabled Chinese girl Jin Jing. No French police even bothered them self to stop it!!! That is why Chinese are so angry with French. In London, London police at least did something. But in Paris, those police just let those protesters do whatever they wanted to do. thirdly, I come up a idea of changing France's Chinese translation name from "Faguo"(literally, law country) to "fu lang si"妇浪死(transliteration), which literally means " woman died from promiscuity".

I have supported the boycott of Carrefour all along for many years, on the grounds that Carrefour just sucks so tremendously hard. Whenever the shit hits the fan in China and the government screws up, the propaganda department always make it the foreigners fault. It was the exact same propaganda move in 1989. Another practically way: do not go to France unless for business. there are lots of other places in Europe, UK is beautiful, so is Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, Italy. Paris/France is such an unsafe place, let us remove it from our travel map. Meanwhile, all ongoing investment with French bankings should be stopped.

Watch bag mentioned this breifly ..but it's not the first time for the French ... not supporting the invasion of Iraq sparked a huge anti-France thing in the states. But not as much for Germany. Right wingers in the states seemed to already have something against the French. All I can say is this - the torch was protested just as harshly in the UK and in the USA. Why not skip straight to the natural conclusion of nationalist sentiment and just boycott anything not 'han chinese'? Also, it a shame for Wang Jianshuo whose blog is usally quite rational - he doesn't feel he is friends with 'french people' because a small amount of them protested the torch relay. Dumb. Two simple errors: 1) That the protesters actions represent 'all French people' 2) That opposing repression in Tibet means you are 'against all ethnic Chinese' in some way. Sorry to say this - but I can't imagine hearing an ethnically Chinese person criticise the Iraq situation and then i'm angry against 'Chinese' for being against all white people - unless I was a Nazi or a moron.

Yeah, the Pentagon screened it after they realized the "Mission Accomplished" moment had soured, turning into a protracted insurgency. Like all historical analogies, it's far from perfect, whether one's talking the US in Iraq or China in Tibet, but the fundamental dynamics of occupation/resistance seem pretty consistent historically.

Check out the classic Gillo Pontecorvo film The Battle of Algiers, an object lesson for occupiers everywhere. God knows the ridiculous Americans could have learned a bit more from it.

And as an American, I can tell you irate Chinese patriots that the most effective way to punish the French is to rename anything with the word "French" in it. They hate that. Look how effective America's "Freedom Fries" campaign was. So just replace the Chinese word for "French" with something like, um, what... "harmonious international non-interventionism" or whatever hideous euphemism sums up China's national attitude toward the rest of the world. It works great!

Seems to me that boycotting companies which happen to be French because of what certain French people did exhibits a fair amount of naivety about how things work. Just because some French people protested the torch doesn't mean all French people are against China. For all we know there could have been members of Carrefour's board of directors in the group protesting in favor of China. Then you would be punishing them by association when they are actually on your side. I wouldn't even think of a boycott unless I heard anti-China statements directly from Carrefour officials. I seem to recall that in France, citizens are allowed to disagree with their leaders and each other.
